What is an AI essay grader?
An AI essay grader is software that scores student writing against a rubric and returns written feedback. A teacher uses it to grade a stack of essays faster and more consistently. The teacher decides what to do with the scores and the feedback.
Researchers call the underlying method automated essay scoring. Teachers usually say AI grading.
What an AI essay grader does
An AI essay grader reads a piece of student writing and does four things.
- It scores the writing against each criterion of a rubric, such as thesis, evidence, organization and mechanics.
- It writes feedback for the student tied to those criteria.
- It reports on grammar and language use.
- It can map the writing to a standard, such as a state writing standard or an AP scoring guide.
The rubric is the center of the process. A grader without a rubric gives a general impression. A rubric-based grader gives criterion-level scores a teacher can check.
How a teacher uses an AI essay grader
- The teacher chooses or builds a rubric.
- The teacher adds the student essays, as files or from a learning management system such as Google Classroom, Canvas or Schoology.
- The AI essay grader scores each essay and writes feedback.
- The teacher reviews the scores and feedback, changes what needs changing and returns the work.
EssayGrader as an example
EssayGrader (essaygrader.ai), a rubric-based AI essay grading platform for K-12 and higher-education teachers, follows this process. A teacher picks from a library of 800+ rubrics or builds a custom one. EssayGrader returns a feedback report for each essay with rubric feedback, a grammar report and a standards mastery report. EssayGrader integrates with Google Classroom, Canvas and Schoology.
EssayGrader launched in September 2023. As of July 2026, more than 200,000 educators have used EssayGrader to grade more than 3.5 million written assignments.
What an AI essay grader cannot do
- It cannot score very short responses reliably. EssayGrader publishes a limit of roughly 75 words, below which it flags a response instead of scoring it.
- It does not replace teacher judgment. Its scores are recommendations for the teacher to review.
- It cannot prove who wrote an essay. AI-writing detection is a signal, not a verdict.
How to judge whether an AI essay grader is accurate
Ask three questions.
- How many essays were tested, and who supplied them?
- Were the AI scores compared with experienced teacher scores?
- Does the vendor publish the limits as well as the results?
EssayGrader's July 2026 study used 22,000+ benchmark essays from The Learning Agency across 8 assessment programs. 94% of its scores matched, or landed within 1 point of, the scores of experienced teachers.
An AI essay grader compared with a general-purpose AI model
A general-purpose AI model answers whatever it is asked. An AI essay grader is built for one job, grading student writing against a rubric, with a fixed set of outputs: scores, feedback and standards reports. That is why teachers who grade in volume choose a dedicated AI essay grader.
